I’m going to make a bold claim here.

If you read till the end of this article, it will change the way you think about weight loss.

I will not tell you what to eat. Or avoid eating.

I won’t reveal ‘ 6 secret weight loss foods’ or anything stupid like that.

Those gimmicks don’t work.

Instead, stay with me for 7 minutes and you will never deal with the nonsense of diet restrictions again.

Ready? Good.

A few years ago, I was a corporate rat. In the office till 8pm daily. Worked most weekends too.

But even though I was buried in work without the time or energy to focus on weight loss, I managed to lose 12 kgs in 4 months.

You can read my full story here, if you wish.

I have also coached 100+ clients and the most common response has been that my approach is flexible, without restrictions.

Here’s some recent feedback I got:

"You gave me freedom to eat anything in moderation. If I had gone to another dietitian, they would have asked me to avoid certain foods. That would have been difficult for me. With your approach, I can eat anything I want – I just have to watch my portions. So I find it easier to follow."
– my client, Melvin

If this sounds relevant to you – let me elaborate.

It started with an interesting observation…

When I started helping busy people lose weight, I noticed that people fell into 2 categories.

One category of people struggled HARD to lose weight. While the second category were easily successful.

I wanted to help my clients do better. So I created a story about both types of people.

I call it the story of…

Dieter Deepak vs Flexible Falgun

These 2 men – Deepak and Falgun, represent the 2 categories of people trying to lose weight.

‘Dieter Deepak’ represents 90% of people. They struggle a lot, have trouble sticking to their plan, and spend a lot of time feeling guilty.

(Note: Both Deepak and Falgun have the same level of willpower. This story is NOT about ‘motivation’ or inspirational gyaan.)

‘Flexible Falgun’ is the smaller segment of people. They lose weight successfully. But here’s the real kicker – it feels EFFORTLESS for them. They make it look easy.

Whenever a new client approached me, I tried to convert him from a ‘Dieter Deepak’ to a ‘Flexible Falgun’. Initially he would struggle. But once this idea ‘clicked’ – everything became easier after that.

If you’re ready, I would like to share this idea with you.

It begins with getting to know Deepak.

(Warning: It is likely that Dieter Deepak will resemble you right now. Maybe not 100%, but close enough to make you uncomfortable as you read this.)

Meet Dieter Deepak

You might relate to Dieter Deepak right now. That’s OK. Sadly, most dietitians endorse this mindset every single day.

I used to be a Dieter Deepak long ago.

I was a corporate rat working 50-55 hours per week. And I had gained weight from the stress of working with horrible clients.

I believed that losing weight was all about eating “good foods” and avoiding “bad foods”.

Everywhere I looked, there was “expert advice” on what to eat or avoid.

“White rice makes you fat. Have brown rice instead”
"Have warm lemon water every morning to burn belly fat”
“Never eat anything with sugar”

I went to a dietitian and she gave me a ‘diet plan’ which told me exactly what to eat and when to eat. I still remember the diet plan vividly.

2 dates at 7am
Vegetable juice at 10.30am
Boiled chanas at 6.30pm

It was tough.

I lived alone – I didn’t have time to boil chana every evening. I didn’t even reach home before 8pm.

But I wanted to ‘follow the diet’. So I made it work somehow.

Cooked the previous night and carried a tiffin. Found a delivery service online for vegetable juice.

I made big sacrifices.

But after a few weeks, my workload increased. I was exhausted after office. And I did not have any support for shopping & cooking.

I couldn’t follow the diet anymore.

I just quit.

And the worst part – I blamed myself.

I told myself –
“If I had more willpower, I would have stuck to my diet”

Sadly, I never questioned if the diet plan was realistic.

Instead, I questioned my motivation.

Anyway, I spent months yo-yo dieting without any real success.

One day, I was at a friend’s house who had a weighing machine. I climbed on it and checked my weight. It had INCREASED by 4kgs.

I was dejected. I realized whatever I was doing was not working. I had to change SOMETHING.

And that’s when it hit me.

I had a choice.

I could continue to do the same thing – follow the ‘best’ diet, make big sacrifices, fail in 2-4 weeks.

OR.

I could work smarter instead. Pick something easier to follow. Which was sustainable.

I was sick of doing the same thing over and over. I was tired of following impractical rules from dietitians.

So I decided to find a ‘smarter’ plan which was hassle-free and practical.

This decision led me down a rabbit hole. I researched and compared different methods of weight loss. I studied and became a certified nutritionist with international credentials.

The real breakthrough came when I stumbled across the ‘evidence-based’ community of bodybuilder scientists who were able to guide me.

(Yes, these guys exist! They are research scientists AND professional bodybuilders.)

Ultimately, this journey helped me become a ‘Flexible Falgun’.

Meet Flexible Falgun

Falgun approaches weight loss in a different manner...

Falgun believes in flexibility.

He follows a ‘lifestyle-first’ mentality. He does not expect unrealistic changes to his work and social life.

He follows ‘flexible dieting’. He asks himself –
“Can I stay on track even if my daily routine gets derailed?”

Falgun eats anything he wants, as long as it fits certain calorie goals & protein goals.

He believes in working smarter, not harder. He makes the minimum sacrifice needed to get results.

His friends are surprised when he orders pizzas or ice-cream. Aren’t you on a diet?”, they ask.

Obviously, he cannot eat 3 pizzas & 5 ice-creams daily. He can’t be reckless. But he knows how to eat them in moderation without gaining weight or sacrificing health. Because he fits them into his calorie goals, protein goals, and other nutrient goals.

My experience as Flexible Falgun

A few years ago, I joined the amazing community of scientific evidence-based fitness professionals. And I gained all the tools to stop being a Dieter Deepak and start becoming a Flexible Falgun.

Weight loss was easy after that.

Imagine life as Flexible Falgun:

You wake up in the morning. Without any ‘diet plans’. Nothing is pre-planned.

You eat among whatever options are available.

You never force yourself to eat anything. You never force yourself to avoid anything.

You never worry about stupid hassles like cooking and shopping for exotic (weird?) ingredients.

When you attend social events or parties, you feel confident you can eat without ruining your progress. In fact, you can even eat a few pizza slices while hitting your calorie & protein goals.

In short – your diet fits your lifestyle. Not the other way around.

THAT is what 'flexible dieting’ is all about.

And that was what MY life looked like. And it worked out AMAZING for me.

For the first time ever, I stuck to a ‘diet’ for over 3 months and lost 9kgs. I had to buy new jeans because my size dropped from 34 to 30.

I looked leaner. More presentable. And I kept receiving compliments from everyone I knew.

“Sounds like bullsh**, Shyam. Losing weight is not easy.”

I agree – losing weight is not easy.

It’s hard.

In fact, it’s one of the most challenging goals I’ve achieved in my life.

That’s precisely WHY I want dieting to be flexible.

Losing weight is so tough – don’t make it worse by following impractical diet rules.

Obviously, you can’t binge on chocolate daily and expect to become a supermodel. Or have 5 packets of chips daily, hoping to become lean.

That’s obvious and you know it.

You still need to hit your calorie and protein goals. There’s no victory without sacrifice.

BUT. The good news? You have freedom to eat whatever is available to you.

And the best part – if you follow flexible dieting, you can choose how much you want to sacrifice.

Faster weight loss involves bigger sacrifices. Tougher nutrient goals.

Slower weight loss involves smaller sacrifices. Easier nutrient goals.

The choice is yours.

If your workload this month is low, you can lose weight fast.

If you have a busy month at work with ten different projects and seven different stakeholders breathing down your neck, you can go slow.

And that’s OK.

Weight loss is a difficult journey. You need to be patient. You need to put in the work.

But becoming a ‘Flexible Falgun’ makes the process easier and lets you eat freely without restrictions and hassles.

And it seems to be working well for my clients. I have one of the highest success rates in the industry. At the time of writing this, 85.33% of my clients have visibly reduced their weight. (Note: The average success rate in the industry is between 20-40%).

Surprisingly, what gets me most excited is not their weight loss alone.

I am happiest when they tell me that the process is easy to follow. I love hearing from them about how ‘weight loss is easy’.

"For a person like me who is a foodie and basically lives to eat, getting fit without having to compromise on food that I love is a blessing. I understand there needs to be control but crash dieting is not the solution and Lazy Fitness’ approach epitomizes this."
– excerpt from Sagar’s feedback

"The time saving is enormous… I myself spent over a year trying to make a meal plan that will work for me, motivating myself to do more, figuring out healthy options etc. It wasn’t fun, and I would’ve saved hours had we spoken before I got started on any of it… Overall I think its a damn good initiative that will help a lot of people."

How Do I Become A Flexible Falgun?

I hope you found this article helpful. I really do.

I don’t want you worrying about preparing kale salad when you have just finished work at 8.30pm. Or thinking about quinoa when you have a deadline at work tomorrow.

I don’t want you getting nervous when you are partying with your friends and the waiter says “We don’t serve any low-carb options”.

I think there’s a better way. So does Falgun 😉

P.S. Remember this quote?

“I will always choose a lazy person to do a difficult job because a lazy person will find an easy way to do it.“ – Frank B. Gilbreth Sr.

Fun fact: This quote inspired the name of my website, ‘Lazy Fitness’.

When I decided to help others lose weight, I wanted to name my business. I wanted to pick something to let my clients know that I will not make you follow impractical rules.

I was struggling to come up with an idea for weeks.

One day, my friend Kishore asked me – “There are many nutritionists out there. How is your approach different from others?”

“My approach is smarter”, I replied without thinking.

Suddenly, this quote came to mind. Immediately, I came up with the name.

Lazy Fitness.

Over the years I have gotten mixed reactions from the name. Some love it. Some hate it.

But the interesting thing is – the people who love the name tend to have great success with the Lazy Fitness System.

When they hear ‘Lazy Fitness’ they immediately GET what it is about.

I hope you are one of them🙂

Thank you for your attention. If you’re curious to know more about the Lazy Fitness System, you are welcome to the next page.
